In his most recent Argentina Report for RobertParker.com, wine critic Luis Gutiérrez tasted over 1,000 wines in Madrid, unable to travel due to the pandemic. This was however, no impediment from getting to know the latest releases of Argentinean wine and, in spite of the distance, get a sense of what the producers have to offer.

For Doña Paula, the high scores obtained reflect the experience and at the same the innovation behind the different lines.

Doña Paula Altitude Series achieved the highest score for the winery, with Altitude Series 1350 2018 vintage receiving 94 points. On the wine, Gutiérrez commented: “the 2018 Altitude Series 1350 shows superbly in this tasting and comes through as characterful, elegant and balanced within the wilder character of Gualtallary”. He added “The oak feels very integrated, harmonious and complete after 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, 20% of them new. It combines power and elegance and extra freshness in 2018”.

In addition, the Doña Paula Altitude Series 1100 2018 was awarded 92 points, with the critic highlighting “It’s varietal, harmonious, elegant and very balanced with neatly integrated oak that has been progressively lowered through the years. Great showing for this cuvée”.

As for Doña Paula’s icon wine, Selección de Bodega 2018, it received 91 points and was described as “It’s creamy and has a lactic touch and is quite ripe and with soft acidity, more fruit than terroir driven. Don´t get me wrong; it’s delicious and easy to drink”.

Lastly, the Doña Paula Estate Malbec 2019 achieved 90+ points, with comments on “The floral and expressive 2019 Estate Malbec matured in used French oak barrels for 10 months, but the oak does not play a part in aromas or flavors, and the wine is very fruit-driven and juicy, softly textured and with some fine chalky tannins. Very pleasant and easy to drink”, he finished.
