With more than 1,800 wines reviewed over the first months of the year, James Suckling alongside associate editor Zekun Shuai, published “More than Malbec: Argentina’s Experiental Evolution”, their report on the country’s current wine scene.
The critic wrote “…it was one of our best tastings yet for this South American vinous powerhouse. With some of the finest terroirs being discovered, blessed by a few consecutively invigorating vintages, Argentina showed wall-to-wall excellence this year with its fast-advancing winemaking and terrific value that few countries can emulate. Not many countries have trodden this far down the path of great wine in such a short time”.
Indeed, Doña Paula received high scores across all its categories. The high-end Los Indios Parcel 2018 received outstanding 95 points, highlighting its “Aromas of blackberry, rosemary, licorice, walnut and cedar. It’s medium-bodied with firm, tightly knit tannins and fresh acidity. Structured and focused with succulent layers of fresh dark fruit, spice and some vanilla notes. Long and refined. Try from 2022”.
The winery’s icon, Doña Paula Selección de Bodega 2018, was awarded 93 points, with the critic commenting on its “Blackcurrant, blackberry, tobacco, mocha and lemon-zest aromas. It’s medium-to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Sleek and energetic. Drink or hold”.
